Real Change Takes Time

Once again, I’m here to talk to you about something I’ve struggled with.

Many of you have let go of what our culture has tried to sell us about health: do whatever you want in your life, it doesn’t really affect your health– as in–

Mind over body. Push through. Wear that body down. Don’t worry, when it’s time, we have a drug to fix it.

This lie was one of the biggest lessons I learned when I became a pharmacist– and part of why I’m here now, teaching people how to care for their bodies instead of covering up chronic symptoms with drugs.

I will say this: there is a time and a place for our allopathic medications and interventions, and I’m grateful we have them. But most of the time, they aren’t the answer.

Have you noticed the similar messaging has now appeared for supplements?

Oh you have X? Just take Y, this magic (expensive) supplement, and you’ll see life changing results. No harmful side effects. No need to alter your life.

We’re sold a whole bucketful of this sort of thing in January.

Ayurveda tells us there is no quick fix. Those symptoms are our bodies' ways of telling us something is off. There is an imbalance in the body, and how we live our lives on a day to day basis has a real impact on our health.

Digestion is the key to all of it: digestion of your food and your life, including all the impressions you take in through your senses every day.

We need good digestion, in fact, to assimilate all the goodness from any supplement (including herbs).

Often, we throw supplements at symptoms hoping we won’t have to face changing our habits ( ✋🏼I’ve been there!).

Supplements, especially herbs, can be a helpful bridge. However, they will not get to the root of the problem.

The root is typically found in the daily routine of our lives: stress, HOW and what we eat, sleep, and our expenditure of energy.
